Compare horse apps for rides, care and expenses

For measured rides, consider Equilab; for care and expenses, My Cheval; for barn administration, BarnManager or Stable Secretary. Halster combines personal records in an iPhone test version, with invitations and additional ride measurements still in development.

How we made this comparison

This guide covers records for real horses: rides, daily care, health and expenses. Horse games and betting apps are outside its scope. We selected six apps with different main uses; this is not a complete list.

“Described by the supplier” means a feature appears on the linked official page. It does not mean we tested its accuracy or everyday use. Planned features do not count as available. Where information is missing, it remains unknown.

Which app supports your task?

External features below are described by the suppliers. The Halster entry uses our 11 October 2026 product status; sources were rechecked on 12 October.

AppWhat it records or managesWhat to check
EquilabRide measurements such as gaits, distance and speed.Live safety tracking and recording with a standalone Apple Watch require Premium according to the store descriptions.
My ChevalHealth appointments, a calendar and expenses. Its store page also describes GPS rides.Worth checking for care, expenses and rides together. The store lists Pro, Ride Premium and Pro Plus.
Happie HorseGaits, GPS routes, duration, speed and a training journal.Free and Premium have different limits. The supplier describes GPS recording.

Which horse apps work on your phone?

App Store links below use the US store. Check the required operating-system version before installing. Listed languages are app languages, not the language of the website; a US listing does not establish UK availability.

What do horse apps cost?

Compare the plan that supports your task. A free download does not make every feature free. Monthly and annual subscriptions below are separate purchases; annual totals are not presented as monthly bills.

These US store listings and supplier prices were checked on 12 October 2026. Check the plan, billing period, tax and renewal price on your purchase screen. The apps do different jobs, so the lowest number is not necessarily the lowest cost for your needs.

UK pricing and Halster’s planned offer

For the UK, the Equilab App Store listing shows £12.99 monthly or £99.99 annually on the same review date. The dollar prices above are not UK prices; we have not checked matching UK plans for every app.

Halster is currently available to test through TestFlight. At launch on 17 November 2026, one Premium subscription covers all your horses. If you are eligible for Apple’s introductory offer, the first two weeks are free. You choose a monthly or annual subscription and confirm it with Apple, with payment details provided in advance. Your subscription then renews automatically at the displayed monthly or annual price for your App Store country until you cancel. Cancel in the App Store at least 24 hours before the free trial or current subscription period ends. One free trial is available per Apple Account per subscription group. Everything you save remains available to view and export after your subscription ends. Euro area: €119.99 a year or €14.99 a month; United Kingdom: £111.99 a year or £13.99 a month; United States: $159.99 a year or $19.99 a month. The public App Store version is not yet available.

Try the same tasks in two apps

Shortlist two apps for your main task. Use the same horse, training note, care appointment and existing receipt in both. This is a test you can run, not a hands-on result claimed by Halster.

  1. Record one training session

Add a short note and find the session again later. If you need measurements, compare the route, duration and any gait breakdown for the same ride. A written training note does not demonstrate tracking.

  2. Create one care appointment

Save the agreed follow-up for the right horse. Check that you can change the appointment and find it again.

  3. Record one expense

Use the same expense and time period. Check that you can see which horse the amount belongs to and correct a mistake.

  4. Check what works without a signal

Open your test note first. In a safe place, disconnect, add a note and reopen the app. After reconnecting, check that it saved and synced. An offline map does not establish that care records also work offline.

  5. Check sharing and leaving

With their permission, ask a second person to try access. Check permissions, exports and access after cancelling before moving your full records. Sending a message is different from editing a shared record.

What happens to your records if you stop paying?

Equilab describes exporting training data as CSV and individual rides as GPX. These serve different purposes: a table of riding data or a route for mapping software.

The US Equilab store description says Premium access continues until the end of the paid period after cancellation. Its renewal terms say to cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. That does not establish which records remain accessible after Premium expires.

The My Cheval release notes describe PDF, CSV and XLSX exports for health and expenses from version 1.6.0. We have not tested the required plan or the contents of those files.

BarnManager Essentials lists reports and CSV exports. This does not establish that every photo and document is included in the same export.

Happie Horse describes read-only access and full access to add or change records. Stable Secretary lists team members for Essentials, Performance and Professional, but not Go!. Check the plan needed by the second carer.

A complete comparison should establish what you can export, which attachments are included and what remains readable after cancelling. We have not established this for every app here. “Unknown” does not mean export is unavailable.

Request a sample export of your own test records. Open it outside the app and check dates, horses, amounts and attachments. Read the supplier’s current privacy and subscription terms too.

For sharing horse records, the My Cheval FAQ describes sharing horse profiles; the other person also needs an account. Check permissions and the plan required. Invitations in Halster are still in development.

Equilab also describes shared calendars, groups, messages and challenges. Decide whether you need conversation, a shared schedule or permission to change a horse record; these are different kinds of collaboration.

Lessons and training guidance

wehorse offers video lessons and a training journal with a supplier-described AI coach. That is a different main task from care records or barn administration. We have not tested the quality of its coaching.

Ridely describes training programs, videos, a calendar and groups. Choose a learning app if your main need is exercises and guidance; a GPS measurement alone does not tell you which exercise to do next.

Trails, courses and sharing your location

  • Trail rides: Equilab describes finding, saving, sharing and downloading trails for offline use. Check that your route is included and available without a signal before setting out.
  • Walking a course: CourseWalk offers course maps, fence photos and minute markers. That is a different task from saving the route you have ridden.
  • Sharing your location: Equilab describes live tracking and alerts when you stop moving. Check connectivity and alerts with your chosen contact. Location sharing does not guarantee that help will arrive.
  • Assessing training: distinguish phone measurements from data collected with extra equipment. Check which device, subscription or sensor is needed, and whether a health metric describes you or your horse.

Other tasks need a different comparison

Buying horses, tack or trailers calls for a marketplace. Health reference guides and weight-estimation tools answer other questions again. They appear alongside riding apps in broad directories, but a marketplace listing, an estimate and a care record are different tools. This guide compares riding and record-keeping tasks; it does not rank sellers or medical reference apps.

Frequently asked questions

Which horse app should I choose?

Start with your main task. Equilab and Happie Horse are options to examine for ride measurements; My Cheval for care and expenses. BarnManager and Stable Secretary cover barn-business tasks. Halster is still an iPhone test version.

Can I already share care in Halster?

You cannot yet invite other carers to work together in the same horse record. That is in development.

Is a free horse app enough?

Equilab, My Cheval and Happie Horse offer free use with paid upgrades. Try your required tasks without upgrading and check the limits. Halster’s planned free trial is temporary, not a permanent free plan.
